European Union Approves Extra €6.1 Billion for Ukraine’s Defense

The European Commission has approved €6.1 billion in new defense procurement for Ukraine, providing additional funding for air and missile defense systems, missiles, ammunition and radar equipment as Kyiv faces intensified Russian missile and drone attacks.

The package was announced on August 24, Ukraine’s Independence Day, and forms part of the European Union’s broader €90 billion Ukraine Support Loan for 2026–2027. Of that overall facility, €60 billion is earmarked for defense-related support and €30 billion for budgetary assistance.

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said the decision demonstrates that European support for Ukraine remains concrete as Russia increases its attacks. The Commission said strengthening Ukraine’s ability to intercept missiles and drones has become particularly urgent.

According to the Commission, Ukraine faced 376 missile strikes in July alone, highlighting the pressure being placed on the country’s air-defense network. The newly approved procurement therefore prioritizes air and missile defense alongside interceptors, ammunition and radar systems.

The latest €6.1 billion allocation comes on top of €16 billion in defense procurement plans already approved under the mechanism. Of that previous amount, €8.35 billion has already been disbursed, bringing the total value of approved procurement plans to more than €22 billion.

The approval does not mean the entire €6.1 billion will immediately be transferred to Kyiv. Ukraine will submit contracts signed with defense manufacturers, after which the European Commission will review them before releasing the corresponding funds.

Most of the equipment is expected to be sourced from European defense companies, making the initiative not only a military-support package for Ukraine but also part of the EU’s effort to expand its own defense-industrial capacity. Brussels has called on manufacturers and member states to increase production, reprioritize orders and accelerate deliveries from existing inventories.

The package comes as Europe assumes an increasingly important role in sustaining Ukraine’s military capabilities. Since Russia’s full-scale invasion in 2022, the EU and its member states have provided more than €220 billion in overall support to Ukraine, while military and defense assistance alone has reached tens of billions of euros.

The latest decision therefore represents more than another financial commitment. By directing billions toward air defense, missiles, ammunition and radar technology, Brussels is seeking to strengthen Ukraine’s immediate ability to protect its cities while simultaneously building a deeper, longer-term defense partnership between Ukraine and Europe.
