A baby has died after a boat carrying migrants capsized in the Channel en route to the UK, according to local coastguards.

The incident occurred on Thursday night, when 65 people were rescued from an overcrowded boat that began sinking off the coast of Wissant in northern France. Rescuers found some individuals already in the water. Among them was an unconscious baby, who was later pronounced dead.

The local authorities stated: “Rescue teams discovered that the overloaded boat was in trouble, with several people in the water. They began recovering those in distress while conducting further searches to locate any others who might be stranded at sea.”

This tragedy follows a similar incident on October 5, when a two-year-old child and three others lost their lives.
