The European Commission has proposed expanding the powers and personnel of Frontex, the European Union’s border agency.
The plan would gradually increase its standing corps to 30,000 officers and establish a rapid reaction force for emergency deployment.
The proposed mandate would also allow the agency to support transfers of migrants between countries outside the EU, extending its operational reach.
Commission officials Henna Virkkunen and Magnus Brunner presented the proposals on Tuesday. The measures remain proposals rather than powers already in force.
