EU Council President: Russia Is the “Only Winner” from the Current War

The President of the European Council, António Costa, stated that Russia appears to be the “only winner” from the current geopolitical conflict that is reshaping global security and economic dynamics.

Costa warned that the escalation of tensions in the Middle East and the broader international security environment risks diverting global attention away from the war in Ukraine, potentially weakening the international pressure placed on Russia.

According to Costa, the instability generated by the conflict has led to rising global energy prices and heightened geopolitical uncertainty—conditions that could indirectly benefit Moscow by strengthening its leverage in global energy markets and shifting diplomatic priorities.

He also emphasized that Europe must remain united in its strategic approach, stressing that the European Union cannot allow international crises to fracture its political cohesion or reduce its commitment to supporting Ukraine.

Costa’s remarks reflect growing concern among European leaders that overlapping global conflicts could alter the balance of power and provide strategic advantages to actors seeking to exploit geopolitical instability.

Bottom line:
European leaders fear that global conflicts and rising geopolitical tensions may create strategic opportunities for Russia, making unity and sustained international focus critical for Europe and its allies.
