Ukraine Crisis:

Wide Russian Attack Cuts Electricity in Odesa

A large-scale Russian missile and drone attack struck Odesa and other parts of Ukraine, damaging energy infrastructure, cutting electricity supplies and injuring several civilians as Moscow intensified its aerial campaign against the country.

Ukrainian officials said the assault on the southern Odesa region targeted power facilities and residential areas. The resulting damage caused widespread electricity outages, affecting homes and essential services across parts of the region.

At least eight people were injured in Odesa, including a child. A 24-storey residential building sustained serious damage, while offices and educational facilities were also reportedly hit. Emergency teams were deployed to extinguish fires, search damaged buildings and assist affected residents.

The Ukrainian Energy Ministry said electricity disruptions were also recorded in four other regions, indicating that the attack formed part of a broader operation against the country’s power network. Technical crews began emergency repairs, although authorities warned that restoring supplies could take time in the most heavily damaged areas.

Russia has repeatedly targeted Ukraine’s electricity generation, transmission and distribution infrastructure since the beginning of the war. Ukrainian authorities accuse Moscow of deliberately attempting to weaken the national grid and place additional pressure on civilians, particularly ahead of periods of increased energy demand.

The latest strikes coincided with a seventh consecutive day of drone attacks against Kyiv. A Russian drone partially destroyed a six-storey residential building in the Ukrainian capital, injuring seven people and damaging a medical facility and an educational institution.

Explosions were reported in several areas of Kyiv, while smoke could be seen rising above parts of the city. Two additional people were injured in the surrounding Kyiv region, where warehouses, private homes and other buildings sustained damage.

Ukrainian air-defence units were activated during the attacks and attempted to intercept the incoming missiles and drones. However, falling debris and weapons that penetrated the defensive network caused damage across multiple locations.

The continued attacks have increased concerns about the resilience of Ukraine’s air defences and energy system. Kyiv has repeatedly appealed to its European and NATO partners for additional interceptor missiles, air-defence systems and equipment needed to repair damaged electricity infrastructure.

Ukrainian officials warned that sustained attacks on energy facilities could lead to further emergency power cuts and disrupt water supplies, heating, transportation and public services. Regional authorities urged residents to conserve electricity and follow air-raid warnings as recovery operations continued.

The latest bombardment demonstrates the growing pressure on Ukrainian cities far beyond the front line, with residential neighbourhoods and strategically important infrastructure remaining vulnerable to Russia’s expanding use of missiles and long-range drones. Reuters
