Russian drone strikes hit railway infrastructure, warehouses and fuel stations across Kyiv on Wednesday morning, killing at least two people and injuring 22, according to city authorities cited by Reuters. Explosions were heard across the Ukrainian capital as smoke rose above the city centre.
Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko said a drone struck a nine-storey non-residential building. A business centre and warehouses were also hit. Authorities reported damage to two fuel stations, while Ukraine’s railway operator said one of its workers was injured in an attack on rail infrastructure.
The strikes came hours after Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy met U.S. President Donald Trump on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly. Zelenskyy said they discussed a possible halt to attacks on energy facilities and Ukraine’s need for more Patriot air defence missiles, but reached no agreement. The Kremlin said Wednesday that conditions for further peace talks with Ukraine were not yet in place.
The damage to transport and fuel facilities adds to Kyiv’s concerns about protecting essential infrastructure as the war continues. Zelenskyy has said he is open to an agreement covering energy targets if Russia also stops attacking Ukrainian infrastructure.
