Ukraine Expands Offensive: Major Drone Attacks and Downed Jet in Latest Moves.
Ukraine continues to push its surprise offensive into Russian territory, with President Volodymyr Zelenskiy announcing further advances and a significant drone attack on Russian airbases. In his nightly address, Zelenskiy highlighted the ongoing progress, claiming Ukraine’s forces have made substantial strides in what is described as the largest assault on Russian soil since World War II.
On Wednesday, Ukraine reported a major drone strike targeting four Russian airbases: Voronezh, Kursk, Savasleyka, and Borisoglebsk. The attack aimed at disrupting Russian warplanes used in glide bomb attacks on Ukraine. Russia confirmed the interception of 117 Ukrainian drones during the night.
Additionally, Ukraine claimed to have shot down a Russian Su-34 jet in the Kursk region and captured 100 Russian prisoners. Ukrainian state TV broadcast footage of Ukrainian troops removing a Russian flag from an official building in Sudzha and showing the aftermath of destroyed Russian military columns.
Zelenskiy emphasized the importance of unity and effective action, recalling Ukraine’s early war efforts. He expressed confidence in Ukraine’s ability to achieve its goals and urged Western partners to support long-range strikes within Russia.
Meanwhile, the UK Ministry of Defence affirmed Ukraine’s right to use British-donated weapons for self-defense, including anti-tank missiles and artillery. However, Storm Shadow missiles are restricted to operations within Ukraine.
As the incursion into Russian territory extends into its second week, Ukraine’s attacks on border regions have led to Russia declaring a state of emergency in Belgorod, joining Kursk. Belgorod Governor Vyacheslav Gladkov described the situation as “extremely difficult” and reported damage to homes and civilian casualties.
Ukrainian officials have stated that their aim is not to occupy Russian land but to prevent missile attacks on Ukraine. The governor of Sumy, Volodymyr Artyukh, noted reduced attacks on civilians in border areas and efforts to repair infrastructure.
Analysts suggest that Kyiv’s offensive is intended to weaken Russia’s eastern front by drawing away troops and disrupting supply lines. The operation has led to a dilemma for Moscow, forcing it to choose between reinforcing its eastern positions or defending against the incursion in Kursk.
The Washington-based Institute for the Study of War has indicated that the offensive may not significantly alter the war’s dynamics but has caused considerable embarrassment for the Kremlin. Over 100,000 Russian civilians have been evacuated, and the White House confirmed that Ukraine did not provide advance notice of the operation.
Russian President Vladimir Putin has suggested that Ukraine’s actions, with Western backing, aim to strengthen Kyiv’s negotiating position and impede Russian advances.
