Europe Faces Prolonged Gas Price Pressure as Winter Storage Falls Short

Europe faces the prospect of persistently high gas prices as lower storage levels and competition for liquefied natural gas leave the region more exposed to winter supply disruptions.

Analysts expect European gas storage to reach 75–78% of capacity by November 1, approximately 10 percentage points below the five-year average, Reuters reported Monday. These are projections, rather than confirmed November figures.

Disruption to Middle Eastern LNG shipments has intensified competition between European and Asian buyers, making it harder to replenish reserves. Analysts cited by Reuters said Europe’s limited storage buffer increases the risk of price spikes if cold weather or further supply interruptions develop.

The pressure is already reaching consumers. Germany’s gas tariffs for new customers have risen 55% this year, according to comparison service Verivox, while existing customers could face increases when contracts renew.

A mild winter could ease demand, but depleted reserves would still require replenishment. The outlook therefore points to continuing price pressure beyond the coming heating season, rather than a guaranteed immediate shortage.
