Berlin Sees Abu Dhabi as an Increasingly Important Strategic Partner

BERLIN – The visit of UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan comes at a moment when Germany is reassessing its economic and political partnerships in response to an increasingly uncertain international environment.

For decades, German foreign economic policy relied on stable global markets, predictable energy supplies and strong commercial relations with major powers. Recent geopolitical crises, supply-chain disruptions and conflicts affecting international trade have forced Berlin to reconsider that model.
Germany is now seeking to diversify its economic relationships and strengthen cooperation with influential states beyond Europe. Within this strategy, the United Arab Emirates occupies an increasingly important position.
The UAE combines significant investment capacity with growing influence in energy, logistics, technology and regional diplomacy. It is also located at the intersection of trade routes connecting Europe with Asia and Africa, making it an attractive partner for Germany’s export-oriented economy.
German officials and business leaders see opportunities to connect the country’s industrial and technological strengths with Emirati capital and access to fast-growing international markets. The potential relationship extends from energy and infrastructure to artificial intelligence, advanced manufacturing, healthcare and climate technology.
The UAE has also become an important investor in international companies and strategic sectors. Its sovereign investment institutions manage substantial global portfolios and are increasingly directing capital towards technology, renewable energy, infrastructure and industries considered essential for future economic growth.
For Germany, attracting such investment could support industrial modernisation at a time when the country faces high energy costs, slower economic growth and intense competition from the United States and Asia.
The political significance of the relationship is equally important. Germany and the UAE share an interest in maintaining secure trade routes, preventing the spread of regional conflicts and protecting the stability of energy markets. Both countries also support international economic connectivity at a time when geopolitical rivalries are placing greater pressure on global commerce.
Berlin does not view Abu Dhabi merely as an energy supplier. The UAE is increasingly seen as a diplomatic actor capable of maintaining communication with governments and political forces that have limited direct contact with Western countries.
This gives the Emirates a potentially valuable role in mediation, humanitarian diplomacy and efforts to reduce regional tensions. Germany, as the largest economy in the European Union, can offer political access to European institutions and support wider cooperation between the UAE and Europe.
The developing partnership is based on a clear exchange of interests: Germany needs investment, energy security and access to new markets, while the UAE seeks technology, industrial expertise and stronger relations with Europe.
Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed’s visit therefore represents part of a broader geopolitical adjustment. As the international order becomes more fragmented, Berlin and Abu Dhabi are seeking dependable partnerships that can withstand political and economic instability.
The success of this approach will depend on whether the agreements announced during the visit are followed by concrete projects. Nevertheless, the political message is already clear: Germany considers the UAE a central partner in its future engagement with the Gulf.
