Kosovo has reaffirmed that joining the European Union remains a strategic national priority, according to statements made by President Vjosa Osmani in an interview with Euronews. Her remarks come amid renewed debate in Europe over enlargement, security, and the future shape of the EU.
President Osmani stressed that Kosovo’s European path is not tactical or temporary, but a long-term strategic decision rooted in the country’s political identity, democratic aspirations, and security interests. She emphasized that Kosovo sees itself as an integral part of the European family, sharing the same values of democracy, rule of law, and respect for human rights.
EU Integration as a Security and Stability Anchor
Osmani highlighted that EU membership is critical not only for economic development but also for regional stability in the Western Balkans. In a region historically affected by political tensions, she argued that Kosovo’s integration into Euro-Atlantic institutions would contribute to lasting peace and reduce external interference.
She linked Kosovo’s EU ambitions directly to Europe’s broader security concerns, noting that instability in the Balkans can have repercussions across the continent. In this context, Kosovo’s alignment with EU foreign and security policy was presented as evidence of its commitment to Europe’s strategic interests.
Frustration Over Delays, Commitment Unchanged
While reaffirming Kosovo’s dedication to reforms, President Osmani acknowledged growing frustration among Kosovars over slow progress and political blockages, including the continued delay in granting visa liberalization and advancing accession steps.
Despite these challenges, she made clear that Kosovo will continue implementing reforms related to the judiciary, governance, and anti-corruption efforts, arguing that these changes are essential regardless of the pace of EU decisions.
Call for a Credible Enlargement Policy
Osmani also urged the European Union to maintain a credible and fair enlargement process, warning that prolonged uncertainty risks undermining pro-European forces in the Western Balkans. She noted that Kosovo has consistently demonstrated alignment with EU policies, including on sanctions and international positions, and expects this commitment to be reciprocated.
A European Future
Concluding her remarks, the President stated that Kosovo’s future “is European by choice, by values, and by destiny.” She framed EU membership not as an abstract goal, but as a strategic framework for Kosovo’s sovereignty, prosperity, and long-term stability.
As the EU reassesses its enlargement strategy in light of geopolitical shifts, Kosovo’s message is clear: joining the European Union remains a strategic cornerstone of its national vision.
