Ukraine Ramps Up Strikes on Russia, Targets Strategic Black Sea Port of Novorossiysk

Ukraine has intensified its long-range campaign against targets inside Russia, launching a major drone and missile attack on Novorossiysk, a strategically important Black Sea port that has become a key hub for Russia’s naval and commercial operations.

The overnight assault on August 12 targeted the Novorossiysk naval base and port infrastructure, including major grain terminals. Ukrainian officials also claimed that several Russian warships were damaged in the operation. Russian authorities reported civilian casualties and damage to infrastructure, while declaring a local emergency following the strikes.

Novorossiysk has taken on growing military importance during the war. After repeated Ukrainian attacks made the Russian Black Sea Fleet’s traditional base in Sevastopol, occupied Crimea, increasingly vulnerable, Moscow shifted significant naval assets toward Novorossiysk. The latest attack demonstrates that the Russian fleet’s alternative sanctuary is now also within reach of Ukraine’s expanding arsenal of long-range weapons.

The scale of the wider Ukrainian aerial campaign was underscored by Russia’s Defence Ministry, which said its air defenses intercepted or destroyed 502 Ukrainian drones overnight across multiple Russian regions. The Russian claim could not be independently verified by Reuters, but the reported number illustrates the growing intensity of drone warfare far beyond the front lines.

The attack also carried economic consequences. Novorossiysk is one of Russia’s most important grain-export gateways, and operations at two major grain terminals were disrupted following the strikes. Concerns about potential interruptions to Russian grain exports contributed to higher wheat prices on international markets.

The developments highlight a broader shift in Ukraine’s strategy. Rather than limiting operations to Russian positions in occupied Ukrainian territory and areas close to the border, Kyiv has increasingly used domestically produced drones and missiles to threaten military, energy and logistical infrastructure deeper inside Russia.

At the same time, Moscow continues its own large-scale attacks against Ukrainian cities, ports and infrastructure. Russia said it struck a fuel facility at the Ukrainian port of Odesa during the same period, illustrating how the Black Sea has become an increasingly important arena in the wider conflict.

The battle over Novorossiysk therefore extends beyond a single port. Its growing vulnerability challenges Russia’s ability to protect naval assets and strategic export infrastructure far from the conventional battlefield, while demonstrating Ukraine’s increasing capacity to project military pressure deep into Russian territory.
