Six Killed in Russian Strikes on Ukraine’s Balakliia and Sumy

Six people were killed and at least 19 others injured in a series of Russian air attacks across Ukraine overnight, according to Ukrainian authorities.

Three people died in the eastern city of Balakliia after strikes hit residential homes. Emergency crews worked to extinguish fires and remove debris from the affected buildings as search and recovery operations continued.

In the northern Sumy region, three more people were killed and at least 19 wounded in attacks on several populated areas. Ukrainian police said 12 of the injuries were recorded in the city of Sumy, where guided aerial bombs struck civilian infrastructure, including a shopping centre.

A separate Russian drone attack targeted a van in Ukraine’s southern Kherson region, injuring six people, according to the regional administration. The conditions of those wounded were not immediately disclosed.

The latest attacks highlight the continuing threat posed by drones and guided bombs to Ukrainian cities and communities located near the front lines. Residential areas and civilian infrastructure have repeatedly suffered damage during the conflict, forcing emergency teams to conduct rescue operations under the risk of further strikes.

Russia and Ukraine have both denied intentionally targeting civilians during the war, which began with Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.
