NATO Shoots Down Drone That Entered Latvia’s Airspace

NATO fighter jets shot down a foreign drone after it entered Latvian airspace early Friday, August 14, in the latest security incident involving unmanned aircraft along the alliance’s eastern flank.

Latvia’s armed forces said fighter jets operating as part of NATO’s Baltic air defence mission were scrambled after the unmanned aircraft was detected inside the country’s airspace. The drone was subsequently intercepted and destroyed, bringing an air threat alert in eastern Latvia to an end.

The incident occurred over the Balvi region in northeastern Latvia, close to the Russian border. Latvian authorities had temporarily warned residents in several eastern municipalities about a potential threat in the airspace. The alert lasted roughly 40 minutes before the military announced that the danger had passed.

Latvian military officials said the drone may have entered the country as a result of Russian electronic warfare activity, although authorities are continuing to investigate the incident and examine debris from the aircraft. Officials have not publicly disclosed all details concerning the drone’s origin or intended target.

The interception comes amid heightened concern among NATO members bordering Russia over drones and other aircraft crossing into alliance airspace as the Russia-Ukraine war continues. Latvia, which is both a NATO and European Union member, has experienced previous incidents involving unmanned aircraft entering or crashing within its territory.

NATO maintains an air policing and defence presence across the Baltic region because Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia do not operate their own fleets of fighter aircraft capable of conducting the mission. Allied countries rotate aircraft and personnel through the region to monitor and protect Baltic airspace.

The latest interception highlights the growing challenge posed by drone activity near NATO’s eastern borders and the alliance’s increasing readiness to respond rapidly when unidentified aircraft enter the sovereign airspace of member states.
