European Stocks Fall for Second Day as Rising Oil Prices Weigh on Sentiment

European shares fell for a second consecutive session on Tuesday as rising crude oil prices dampened investors’ appetite for risk, while markets awaited major corporate earnings reports.

The decline reflected caution over the outlook for business costs and profits, with elevated energy prices adding pressure to an already uncertain investment environment. Investors were also watching upcoming results for signs of whether spending on artificial intelligence continues to support company growth.

Oil remained a key concern. Brent crude touched a five-month high during trading as reports of attacks on shipping and Saudi targets intensified fears of supply disruptions in the Middle East. Analysts cautioned that part of the increase reflected a geopolitical risk premium that could ease if oil supplies remained uninterrupted.

European technology stocks also faced selling pressure. Semiconductor companies including ASML, ASM International and Infineon declined as investors reassessed expectations for AI-related businesses and scrutinised the profitability of investment across the sector.

Despite the weaker market, expectations for European corporate earnings remained relatively strong. Third-quarter profits for STOXX 600 companies were projected to grow by 20.7% from a year earlier, according to Reuters, with energy companies and businesses supplying data-centre infrastructure among the main drivers.

Investors are now looking beyond headline profits to management forecasts, particularly whether companies can sustain growth while absorbing higher costs. Those outlook statements could help determine whether earnings provide enough support to offset pressure from expensive oil.
