European shares advanced in Monday morning trading as banking stocks strengthened and oil prices eased, while investors awaited corporate earnings for fresh direction.
The STOXX 600 rose 0.56% to 635.09 points by 08:43 GMT on October 12. Its banking sector gained 1.5%, while Spain’s bank-heavy IBEX climbed 1.1%, according to Reuters. These figures reflect intraday trading rather than closing results.
Oil prices declined during the reporting period amid hopes of a pause in Russian-Ukrainian attacks on energy facilities. Investors were also assessing whether upcoming company results would show resilience despite geopolitical uncertainty and elevated borrowing costs.
Attention is turning to third-quarter earnings, particularly from semiconductor companies and businesses exposed to artificial intelligence. LVMH was scheduled to report after European markets closed, with ASML and EQT due later in the week.
Eurozone bond yields also eased, supporting appetite for equities, although borrowing costs remained near multi-year highs.
Monday’s early gains therefore came ahead of an important test: whether corporate profits and outlooks can sustain investor confidence as energy markets and geopolitical developments remain uncertain.
