A Ukrainian drone attack on the Russian city of Nizhnekamsk has killed at least 13 people and wounded dozens more, marking one of the deadliest recent Ukrainian strikes inside Russian territory and highlighting Kyiv’s growing ability to hit strategic targets hundreds of kilometers from the battlefield.
The attack struck Nizhnekamsk in Russia’s Republic of Tatarstan on August 10. Russian authorities said at least 13 people were killed, including a child and several citizens of Central Asian countries, while 39 others were initially reported injured.
Among the foreign victims were seven Uzbek citizens, according to Uzbekistan’s consulate in Kazan. Reuters reported that the victims included people living or working in the industrial city, which is one of Russia’s most important centers for oil refining and petrochemical production.
Ukraine’s military acknowledged carrying out the operation and said its target was Tatneft’s TANECO oil refinery in Nizhnekamsk. The facility is a major component of Russia’s energy industry and lies in Tatarstan, roughly 800 kilometers east of Moscow and far from the Ukrainian border. Ukrainian officials said a fire was recorded at the refinery following the attack.
The strike also affected civilian areas. Russian officials said nine of those killed were inside a hostel when it was hit, intensifying accusations from Moscow that the attack deliberately endangered civilians. Russian authorities opened a terrorism investigation following the incident.
Kyiv, however, says its expanding campaign against Russian oil refineries, fuel depots and other energy facilities is aimed at weakening the infrastructure that supports Moscow’s war effort. Ukraine has increasingly relied on domestically produced long-range drones to reach industrial and military targets deep inside Russia.
The Nizhnekamsk operation demonstrates the rapidly expanding range of those attacks. Tatarstan is located far beyond the traditional battlefield, yet its large oil and industrial facilities have become increasingly exposed to Ukrainian long-range weapons.
The TANECO refinery has previously been targeted, including in June, underscoring its strategic importance in Ukraine’s campaign against Russia’s energy sector.
The latest attack also comes amid continuing Russian strikes against Ukrainian cities. On the same day, Russian attacks on Zaporizhzhia killed five people and injured around 20, while explosions and fires were reported in Kyiv.
Both Moscow and Kyiv deny deliberately targeting civilians, but the increasing reach of drones and missiles on both sides has brought communities far from the front line into the conflict.
The deaths in Nizhnekamsk therefore represent more than another episode in the escalating drone war. They demonstrate how the conflict is increasingly extending deep into Russian territory, while energy facilities, industrial centers and surrounding civilian communities become part of an expanding long-range battlefield.
