Ukrainian Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal has officially submitted his resignation, marking the beginning of a major government reshuffle initiated by President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. The Ukrainian parliament is set to vote on Wednesday to formally dismiss Shmyhal’s government.
In a public statement shared on his Telegram channel, Shmyhal confirmed his departure:
“I am tendering my resignation from the post of the Prime Minister of Ukraine.”
Yuliia Svyrydenko Expected to Succeed as Prime Minister
President Zelenskyy has nominated Yuliia Svyrydenko, the current First Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of the Economy, to replace Shmyhal. At 39 years old, Svyrydenko would become the first female Prime Minister of Ukraine if confirmed by parliament.
Svyrydenko has played a critical role in Ukraine’s international economic diplomacy, including securing a strategic mineral agreement with the United States. She has frequently represented Ukraine in talks with Western allies, focusing on defence partnerships, post-war recovery, and economic reconstruction.
With Zelenskyy’s Servant of the People party holding a parliamentary majority, her confirmation is widely expected to proceed without major resistance.
Wider Cabinet Changes Anticipated
This reshuffle comes at a time of heightened military pressure on Ukraine’s eastern front, with intensified Russian attacks involving missiles and drones. Zelenskyy’s government is seeking to adjust its leadership to better navigate both the war effort and Ukraine’s broader strategic direction.
Among other anticipated changes:
- Shmyhal is reportedly being considered for the post of Defence Minister, a role currently held by Rustem Umerov.
- If Umerov is reassigned, he may become Ukraine’s new Ambassador to Washington, replacing Oksana Markarova, whom Zelenskyy has indicated he intends to replace.
Umerov’s Tenure Under Review
Appointed in September 2023, Defence Minister Umerov took office in the wake of corruption scandals that plagued the ministry. While he has introduced reform efforts, critics argue that his tenure has been marked by inefficiencies and management challenges.
This reshuffle is seen as an effort by Zelenskyy to streamline the government during wartime and to enhance Ukraine’s international representation and domestic defence capabilities.
