As the war between Russia and Ukraine continues into its third year, the conflict remains highly dynamic, marked by devastating missile strikes, cross-border incursions, and geopolitical maneuvering involving the U.S. and its allies. Below is a comprehensive update based on the latest battlefield developments, diplomatic agreements, and civilian tolls.

Russia Intensifies Long-Range Strikes on Ukrainian Cities

On Tuesday, Russia launched one of its most aggressive aerial attacks in recent months, firing 175 drones, 14 cruise missiles, and 2 ballistic missiles on four Ukrainian cities. The capital Kyiv experienced its deadliest strike since July 2024, with at least 14 people killed and 99 injured, according to Tymur Tkachenko, head of Kyiv’s civil-military administration. Other targeted cities included Odesa, Chernihiv, and Zaporizhzhia, with 17 injuries reported in Odesa alone.

These attacks came in retaliation for a daring Ukrainian drone operation deep inside Russia weeks earlier, in which four airfields housing strategic bombers were hit. Ukraine claimed that over 40 Russian aircraft were damaged or destroyed, though independent analysts place the figure closer to 10–12. Russia officially acknowledged only “several units” of damaged aviation equipment.

U.S.-Ukraine Strategic Resource Deal Finalized

The Trump administration has concluded a controversial energy and mineral access agreement with Ukraine. The deal, signed at the U.S. Treasury Department, grants the U.S. preferred access to critical minerals and energy assets in Ukraine in exchange for a new “reconstruction investment fund.”

While the agreement does not include the retroactive compensation Trump originally demanded for $100 billion in military aid, it redefines future U.S. military assistance—such as air defense systems—as “investment” rather than aid. It also lacks security guarantees, meaning Ukraine remains bound by its terms regardless of whether peace is achieved with Russia.

Ukrainian Forces Retreat from Kursk, Lose Bargaining Chip

In August 2024, Ukraine launched a surprise offensive, temporarily seizing 1,300 square kilometers of Russia’s Kursk region. However, the incursion eventually backfired. Russia, mobilizing a force of 50,000 troops, including 10,000 North Koreans, recaptured key positions by spring 2025.

The Russian Ministry of Defense confirmed the retaking of Sudzha in March, removing a significant bargaining advantage for Ukraine in any future peace talks. Ukrainian forces, overstretched in Kursk, were also forced to cede ground in eastern Donetsk.

Eastern Frontline: A War of Attrition

The war has devolved into a brutal 1,000-kilometer frontline, stretching from Kherson in the south to Kharkiv in the northeast, with both sides entrenched in trench warfare. Ukraine has struggled to hold back Russia’s superior manpower and artillery, especially in the Donetsk region, where Russia captured 4,200 square kilometers in 2024 alone, according to the Institute for the Study of War.

Ukrainian efforts to draft additional soldiers have been hindered by recruitment challenges and public discontent over the indefinite nature of military service.

Drone Warfare Dominates the Battlefield

Drones remain a defining feature of the war. Ukraine has used long-range UAVs to strike deep into Russian territory, including Moscow suburbs, arms factories, and even sinking one-fifth of Russia’s Black Sea fleet, according to estimates.

However, Ukraine’s 2023 counteroffensive stalled in the face of extensive Russian minefields, drone surveillance, and artillery strikes. These conditions continue to prevent any significant breakthroughs on the ground.

Civilian Toll and Cultural Destruction

The war has sparked one of the largest refugee crises in modern history, displacing millions. A Financial Times investigation revealed that Ukrainian children abducted during the early phases of the war were adopted inside Russia, in some cases under false identities, highlighting ongoing human rights abuses.

Timeline of Key Events

  • Feb 24, 2022: Russia launches full-scale invasion after months of Western warnings.
  • Mar 2022: Ukrainian forces repel Russian efforts to capture Kyiv, aided by local resistance and modern weaponry.
  • May 2023: Battle for Bakhmut ends with a costly Russian victory; an estimated 30,000 Wagner Group fighters, many of them convicts, are killed. A month later, Wagner leader Yevgeny Prigozhin mutinies and is later killed in a plane crash.
  • 2024–2025: Ukraine loses gains in Kursk, Russia consolidates control in Donetsk, and U.S.-Ukraine mineral agreement reshapes future military cooperation.

Looking Ahead

As negotiations loom between Kyiv, Moscow, and Washington, Ukraine faces mounting pressure to stabilize its defenses, manage domestic discontent, and adapt to a shifting global landscape. Meanwhile, Russia continues to exploit manpower advantages and foreign fighters to reinforce its hold over occupied territories.

The conflict shows no sign of immediate resolution—and the next phase of U.S. involvement, shaped by economic stakes rather than purely military ones, may determine Ukraine’s long-term prospects for sovereignty and recovery.
