Russian Raids Continue in Ukraine, Causing Deaths and Widespread Destruction

Russian military strikes on Ukraine have persisted in recent weeks and months, inflicting new civilian casualties, injuries, and extensive damage to homes, infrastructure, and essential services across multiple regions of the country. The attacks, carried out through a combination of missiles, drones, and artillery, underline the ongoing intensity of the conflict more than three years after it began in February 2022.

According to Ukrainian authorities, overnight Russian strikes in late January 2026 killed two civilians in the Kyiv region and injured several others across cities including Odesa, Kryvyi Rih, and Zaporizhzhia. Residential buildings were damaged, power infrastructure was hit, and heating services were disrupted for hundreds of homes as a result of the barrage. These attacks formed part of a continuing winter bombardment campaign that has targeted urban centers and critical facilities.

In a separate incident the day before, a major Russian drone and missile attack on Odesa killed at least three people and injured more than twenty others, including children and a pregnant woman. Several apartment blocks and parts of the city’s power grid were struck, leading to widespread outages and emergency responses. The train station in the nearby Kharkiv region was also struck, with fatalities and missing persons reported by regional officials.

These assaults reflect a sustained pattern of Russian aerial and artillery operations that repeatedly target not only military positions but also civilian infrastructure and urban neighborhoods, causing widespread destruction across central and southern Ukraine. Past campaigns have led to significant casualties and severe humanitarian consequences, including disruptions to electricity, water, and heating amid the harsh winter months.

Human rights observers and independent analysts have documented repeated missile and drone strikes on homes, schools, hospitals, and energy facilities, contributing to a sharp increase in civilian harm in 2025 compared with previous years. Some attacks have been described as part of a deliberate campaign to disrupt everyday life and overwhelm local defenses.

Despite ongoing diplomatic efforts and peace negotiations, hostilities on the ground show no signs of abating, with both sides continuing military operations and Ukraine appealing for increased international support to defend against the bombardments and protect civilian communities.
