Russian forces launched a new wave of attacks on the Ukrainian cities of Kyiv and Zaporizhzhia early Tuesday, August 11, killing at least five people and injuring around 20 others as the war continues to bring deadly strikes to major urban centers.
According to Ukrainian regional authorities, the heaviest casualties were reported in the southeastern city of Zaporizhzhia, where five people were killed and 20 others wounded. The attack involved missiles and aerial bombs and caused significant damage to buildings, vehicles and infrastructure, with fires breaking out at several locations.
Kyiv also came under attack overnight. Ukrainian officials said ballistic missiles were launched toward the capital, triggering air-raid warnings and explosions across the city. Fires broke out in a central district, including at warehouse facilities, while at least one person was reported injured. Emergency crews were deployed to affected areas as firefighters worked to contain the damage.
Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko urged residents to remain in shelters during the alerts as Ukrainian air defenses responded to the incoming threat. The capital and several other regions faced repeated air-raid warnings during the night.
The latest strikes come amid an intensification of long-range attacks by both Russia and Ukraine. Ukrainian forces have increasingly targeted military and energy-related facilities deep inside Russia, while Moscow has continued missile, drone and aerial-bomb attacks across Ukrainian territory.
The overnight assault highlights the continuing risks faced by civilians as the conflict stretches further into 2026, with both sides expanding the geographic reach and frequency of their long-range operations.
