NAPLES – Xavi maintains optimism about Barcelona’s chances of advancing to the Champions League quarter-finals despite witnessing his team being held to a 1-1 draw against Napoli in the first leg of their last-16 encounter on Feb 21.
Although Barcelona dominated large portions of the game in Naples, they return to Spain on level terms after Victor Osimhen secured a draw for the hosts with their only shot on target.
Despite the setback, Xavi’s side, who scored through Robert Lewandowski, created numerous opportunities and came agonizingly close to securing a last-minute victory when Ilkay Gundogan’s low shot narrowly missed the target.
“The way we played today gives us a strong chance of advancing. We showed quality both in attack and defense, and after scoring, we continued to create opportunities,” stated the Barcelona coach.
“We felt we deserved the win, but in the Champions League, any lapse can be costly. It’s disappointing that the result didn’t mirror our performance. Nevertheless, I’m pleased because we executed our game plan effectively. I’m proud of the team’s performance, and we’re prepared to compete in the second leg.”
Barcelona, currently third in La Liga and trailing Real Madrid by eight points, made their first Champions League knockout appearance in three years.
Napoli, under new coach Francesco Calzona, struggled domestically, sitting ninth in Serie A. Both teams faced challenges, with Napoli particularly frustrated by Barcelona’s high press, leading to missed passes and turnovers.
Barcelona’s Gundogan had two off-target shots before Lewandowski scored in the 60th minute, firing a precise shot from Pedri’s pass. Napoli responded, with Osimhen scoring the equalizer with a skillful shot from inside the box, setting up an exciting return leg on March 12.
Despite the result, Calzona, who took over as Napoli’s manager on February 19, was content with his team’s performance in his debut match, which was arranged quickly due to the club’s managerial changes.
“What impressed me most was the team’s determination to fight back. While there are tactical areas to improve, I received positive responses from the substitutes, which makes me happy,” he expressed.
“We could have suffered a loss, but we managed to secure a draw and even had opportunities to clinch victory. Although we faced difficulties initially, I admired the team’s spirit… The players displayed immense dedication to avoid defeat against a formidable opponent, and for that, I’m satisfied.”
“Facing Barcelona is challenging for any team, but the draw keeps us in contention. It’s essential for Napoli to maintain that ambition, and we aim to progress. The return leg will undoubtedly be tough for us.”
