Authorities in the Netherlands have confirmed that two people died in separate incidents linked to New Year fireworks celebrations, while a historic church in Amsterdam suffered significant damage after a fire broke out during the festivities.

Dutch emergency services reported that both fatalities occurred late in the evening in different municipalities. One victim is believed to have been injured while handling powerful, illegal fireworks, while the second died after an explosion caused severe trauma. Investigations are underway, and police say they are examining whether banned fireworks were involved — a recurring issue in recent years.

Fire Engulfs Historic Amsterdam Church

In Amsterdam, firefighters battled for hours to contain a blaze that erupted in a historic church building dating back over a century. Thick smoke billowed across surrounding streets as residents were evacuated from nearby homes out of precaution.

Authorities have not yet confirmed the cause, but early assessments indicate fireworks may have ignited nearby materials before the flames spread to the roof. No casualties were reported from the church fire, though structural damage is described as “extensive.”

Debate Rekindled Over Fireworks Regulations

The incidents have reignited national debate over private fireworks use in the Netherlands. Several municipalities have already introduced partial bans, citing injuries, fires, and pressure on emergency services. Health and safety officials argue that stricter nationwide restrictions may be necessary.

Prime Minister and local leaders expressed condolences to the victims’ families while praising first responders for their rapid efforts under difficult conditions.

A Night of Celebration Turns Tragic

What began as traditional holiday celebrations turned somber as images of the damaged church and emergency scenes circulated widely across Dutch media. Officials warned citizens to exercise extreme caution ahead of remaining festivities and reminded the public of existing safety regulations.

Authorities say further details will be released once investigations are complete.
