Spain Heads for November 29 Snap Election After Parliament Rejects Housing Measures

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez announced on Monday that an early general election would be held on November 29, following parliament’s rejection of emergency measures intended to tackle the country’s housing crisis.

The announcement brings forward a national vote that had been expected next year. It follows growing public pressure over housing affordability and a legislative defeat that exposed the difficulties facing Sánchez’s minority government.

Congress rejected the government’s two housing decrees on Friday despite last-minute negotiations to secure support. Sánchez spent the weekend consulting ministers and senior members of his Socialist Party before deciding to seek a fresh electoral mandate. His coalition has increasingly struggled to assemble enough parliamentary votes to advance its agenda.

Housing costs have become a central political issue, with demonstrations spreading across Spain. Public anger intensified after an 87-year-old woman with a disability was evicted from her Madrid apartment, an incident that helped galvanise demands for stronger protections for tenants. The government’s emergency response failed to attract sufficient backing in parliament.

In his televised address, Sánchez called for renewed public support and a broader progressive parliamentary majority capable of passing social reforms. The election represents a significant political gamble: his Socialist Party trails the conservative People’s Party in opinion polls, while the far-right Vox could play a decisive role in forming the next government.

People’s Party leader Alberto Núñez Feijóo has welcomed the prospect of an election and signalled that his party could govern with Vox. Sánchez, who has led Spain since 2018, now faces a campaign in which voters’ frustration over housing costs will compete with scrutiny of his government’s wider record.
