Former cabinet minister Jacob Rees-Mogg reiterated his support for Donald Trump and claimed “Biden doesn’t like Britain” in a leaked recording.
Rees-Mogg expressed his desire to “build a wall in the English Channel” while praising Trump and the Republican stance on immigration. Speaking to young Conservative activists, he defended Trump’s approach by emphasizing the importance of a secure border.
“If I were American I’d want the border closed, I’d be all in favour of building a wall. I’d want to build a wall in the middle of the English Channel,” Rees-Mogg stated.
Rees-Mogg is currently facing a strong Labour challenge in his North East Somerset and Hanham constituency against Dan Norris, the mayor of the West of England, who held the seat until Rees-Mogg’s victory in 2010.
A popular figure among Tory members, Rees-Mogg could play a significant role in the Conservative leadership race if he retains his seat. Support for Trump’s White House bid remains a divisive issue within the party, splitting the right from the centrist One Nation group.
Notable Conservative figures, including former prime ministers Liz Truss and Boris Johnson, as well as former MPs Andrea Jenkyns and Jake Berry, have publicly supported Trump. Johnson described Trump’s potential return as a “big win for the world,” while Jenkyns and Berry also expressed their support for his policies.
Speaking at a Young Conservative event in March, Rees-Mogg said, “Every so often, I slightly peek over the parapet and say if I were an American, I would vote for Donald Trump. It’s always the most unpopular thing I ever say in British politics, but I’m afraid it’s true. I would definitely vote for Donald Trump against Joe Biden.”
In the recording, Rees-Mogg expressed concerns over Biden’s attitude toward Britain, stating it was more important to him than the US-Mexico border issue. “I want Trump to succeed as he looks like the candidate. And one does to some degree worry about the mental acuity of President Biden,” he added.
Reform UK leader Nigel Farage, also a vocal Trump supporter, has appeared at multiple US rallies and aims to replicate Trump’s success in the UK. Farage recently echoed Trump’s slogan, stating he would “make Britain great again.”
Rees-Mogg did not respond to requests for comment.
