Lagarde Announces Early Departure from European Central Bank Presidency

Christine Lagarde will step down as president of the European Central Bank on February 7, 2027, leaving before the scheduled end of her term as Europe faces renewed inflation pressures and growing political uncertainty.

The ECB confirmed on Thursday that Lagarde had informed its Governing Council and European Council President António Costa of her decision. Her successor will be appointed by the European Council through the European Union’s formal nomination process.

Lagarde’s eight-year term had been due to conclude in October 2027. Her announcement ends months of speculation about an early departure and opens the selection process for one of Europe’s most influential economic positions.

The leadership change comes at a difficult moment for the euro zone. Higher energy prices are threatening to prolong inflation, while rising borrowing costs are weighing on households, businesses and government finances. On Thursday, the ECB left interest rates unchanged but warned that mounting energy costs presented further risks to the inflation outlook.

European Council President Costa said the search for a successor would begin immediately. Former Dutch central bank governor Klaas Knot and former Spanish central bank governor Pablo Hernández de Cos are widely regarded as leading contenders, according to Reuters. Neither has been formally selected.

Financial markets initially showed little reaction to the announcement. Analysts cited by Reuters said the ECB’s established policy framework could help maintain continuity through the transition, although its next president will inherit a challenging balance between controlling inflation and supporting economic stability.
