Germany Investigates Explosives-Laden Drone Found at Leipzig/Halle Airport

German federal prosecutors have taken over an investigation into the discovery of a drone equipped with professional explosives and a detonator at Leipzig/Halle Airport, escalating the case into a major national-security investigation.

The drone was discovered late Tuesday at the airport in eastern Germany, one of Europe’s largest cargo hubs. Germany’s Federal Prosecutor’s Office said evidence indicated that the device was intended to cause an explosion and described the incident as a “serious attack” on Germany’s transport and logistics infrastructure that could threaten the country’s internal and external security.

Bomb-disposal specialists were deployed and successfully neutralised the device. The incident temporarily disrupted airport operations while authorities secured the area and examined the drone and its explosive payload.

The location has added to the seriousness of the investigation. Leipzig/Halle Airport is a strategically important freight hub and supports logistics connected to Ukraine and NATO activities. The drone was reportedly discovered near Ukrainian Antonov cargo aircraft operating from the airport.

German authorities have not publicly identified who was responsible for the incident, and investigators are examining the drone’s origin, flight path and explosive components to determine whether individuals or a foreign actor were involved.

The discovery comes amid heightened concern in Germany over suspicious drone activity around airports, military installations and other critical infrastructure. Earlier this year, Berlin expanded authorities’ powers to counter hostile drones amid concerns that unmanned aircraft could be used for espionage or sabotage.

The Leipzig/Halle incident is therefore likely to intensify calls for stronger anti-drone protection around German airports and other strategic sites as investigators work to establish who launched the aircraft and what its intended target was.
