Two people have died and another remains missing after torrential rain caused severe flooding across Catalonia, leaving streets, roads and residential areas submerged and prompting a major emergency response.
Euronews reported on Monday that firefighters had responded to more than 1,500 calls. Footage showed swollen waterways in Pineda de Mar and flooded neighbourhoods in Vilanova del Vallès, with muddy water and debris covering roads and fields. Emergency crews were seen pumping water out of affected areas and navigating damaged routes.
The fatalities occurred in Tordera and Montornès del Vallès. Catalan authorities said one man died when a wall collapsed in Tordera, while firefighters confirmed a second death in Montornès del Vallès. A person was also reported missing in Pineda de Mar, north of Barcelona.
A red weather alert was issued on Saturday as intense rainfall affected Barcelona, Girona and surrounding communities. Residents were urged to stay indoors as rapidly rising water flooded roads and neighbourhoods. According to Euronews, the missing person was reportedly swept away by a stream.
The storm also disrupted transport and essential services. Flooding affected homes and public buildings, while damaged infrastructure, power outages and interruptions to rail services complicated recovery efforts. Local reporting documented submerged vehicles, fallen trees and damage to bridges, hospitals and schools.
The emergency extended into Monday, when renewed heavy rain triggered additional warnings and transport interruptions. Authorities urged people to avoid unnecessary journeys, stay away from waterways and refrain from entering basements. Flooded railway tracks in Granollers forced services to stop, and passengers were evacuated from one train as a precaution.
The more than 1,500 firefighter calls cited by Euronews represent an earlier reporting snapshot. Subsequent regional reporting placed the number of firefighter interventions at 2,440, underscoring the scale of the response as Catalonia began assessing damage and restoring services.
