Britain’s monarch, King Charles III, will emphasize the significance of gestures of friendship, particularly during challenging times, in an Easter message set for Thursday. This message comes in the wake of his and the Princess of Wales’s cancer diagnoses.
The pre-recorded audio remarks will be aired during a Maundy Thursday service at Worcester Cathedral in central England, as per excerpts previewed by Buckingham Palace.
Charles, aged 75, will highlight the importance of individuals who offer friendship during times of difficulty, stating that as a nation, “we need and greatly benefit from those who extend the hand of friendship to us, especially in a time of need”.
The remarks follow the announcement from the 75-year-old monarch’s daughter-in-law, Catherine, who revealed last Friday in a heartfelt video message that she too was undergoing cancer treatment.
In the message, the king does not specifically mention his son and heir William’s wife.
However, observers of the royal family are likely to perceive his words as a demonstration of the support received by both him and the princess during their health challenges.
The Maundy Thursday religious service holds a significant place on the royal calendar, marking the beginning of the Easter weekend.
During the Maundy Thursday service, Charles will be represented by his wife, Queen Camilla.
Following her announcement, Catherine, 42, expressed gratitude for the outpouring of support she had received.
Last month, Charles shared that he had been deeply moved to tears by the supportive messages and cards he received.
The announcement of Charles’ cancer diagnosis came in early February, just 17 months into his reign, prompting him to temporarily suspend all public engagements to focus on treatment.
Despite his health challenges, Charles is scheduled to attend an Easter Sunday church service this weekend.
In January, he underwent surgery for a benign prostate condition, only to be diagnosed with a separate form of cancer shortly afterward.
The specific type of cancer has not been disclosed publicly.
Throughout his treatment, Charles has maintained his duties behind the scenes, occasionally attending in-person meetings and official engagements.
He commended Kate, widely known as Kate, for her courage in sharing her experience of undergoing preventive chemotherapy.
Her last public appearance was on December 25, following which she underwent abdominal surgery in January, leading to the discovery of cancer.
According to her office at Kensington Palace, she was anticipated to resume public engagements only after Easter, given her recovery timeline.
