EU Parliament President Metsola Urges Swift Action and Tougher Sanctions on Iran

President of the European Parliament Roberta Metsola has called on the European Union to move faster and adopt a tougher stance against the Iranian regime, urging member states to tighten sanctions and respond more decisively to Tehran’s actions.

In recent remarks, Metsola warned that delays and internal divisions within the EU risk weakening Europe’s credibility and influence at a time when Iran continues to challenge international norms. She stressed that the Union must act with unity and urgency, arguing that existing measures are no longer sufficient to address the scale of concerns surrounding Iran’s behavior.

Metsola pointed specifically to Iran’s human rights record, regional activities, and ongoing security concerns, saying that Europe cannot afford a “wait-and-see” approach. According to her, stronger and more targeted sanctions would send a clear political message that violations of international law and repression at home will not go unanswered.

The call comes amid growing debate within the EU over how far to go in confronting Tehran, with some member states favoring tougher measures while others caution against steps that could further escalate tensions or undermine diplomatic channels.

Metsola emphasized that sanctions should be part of a broader, coherent strategy that combines political pressure with support for international accountability mechanisms. She also underlined the European Parliament’s role in pushing for firmer action, even as final decisions rest with member states and EU institutions.

Her remarks add pressure on European leaders as they consider next steps on Iran, highlighting a push from within the EU’s top democratic body for faster, more decisive action in the face of mounting challenges.
