German authorities have detained a 33-year-old Ukrainian national suspected of collecting information about a defence company in southern Germany on behalf of an unidentified foreign intelligence service.
Federal prosecutors said the man was arrested on Sunday after allegedly gathering information at the company’s premises. Investigators believe the suspected intelligence activity may have been intended to support a future act of sabotage.
The suspect is accused of operating as a low-level agent for a foreign intelligence agency. German authorities have not disclosed which country he is alleged to have served or identified the defence company involved.
Further details about the information allegedly collected, the method used by the suspect and whether other individuals were involved have not been made public. The investigation remains ongoing.
The arrest comes as Germany strengthens security around military and industrial facilities amid growing concerns over espionage, sabotage and covert operations targeting European defence companies.
The allegations against the suspect have not been proven in court, and German prosecutors have not announced formal charges.
